HOMEWORK CENTER
Students
are encouraged to work in the homework center afterschool to get the math
help they need. Students will be expected to work in the Homework Center
after shcool if they fall behind.
A grade of D+ or lower can result in a student contract requriing them to attend the Homework center. Testing for remediation gaps in need of filling will be expected for any student who consistently fail their math examinations.
TUTORIAL TIME
Teachers
will be available before or after school as requested for students in need
of help. In addition, parents may wish to secure a good private math tutor
if their student is struggling.
Student study groups are also extremely beneficial to the learning of all group members. All students are urged to form some type of study group and attend regularly throughout the year. Lunch math tutoring sessions can be made by special arrangement.
Most Monday's
students have a 1 hour 'S' period. This period is often used by students
to get the math help they need to succeed. It is not uncommon for students
to show up to these sessions with friends, and on occasion, parents/guardians.
Occasionally the math department meets during S periods. Please make sure
the teacher is available prior to arranging a campus visit. It's a great
timeslot for students to get up to speed.
TECHNOLOGY
Cognitive
Tutor Software- The Cognitive Tutor from Carnegie Learning includes full curricula
in Algebra I. Each curriculum combines software-based, individualized
computer lessons with collaborative, real-world problem-solving activities.
A class lecture series is held in conjunction with this s/w.
Graphing
Calculato - The Graphing Calculator from Pacific Technology is a tool for quickly
visualizing math. Students simply type an equation and it is drawn for
them without complicated dialogs or commands. It's a powerful visual
tool that allows students to 'get creative' while learning math.
